Bricks & Glass

I was in an area of down town Edmonton last week that I haven't been in before and the pattern of bricks on this building caught my eye. I also liked the remnants of the advertising on the side of the building.

Thanks for looking.

  1. I LOVE buildings like that, with intricate brickwork and architecture. The newer buildings are boring in comparison -- although that building actually looks kind of new. It is well taken care of, right?
We have some old, interesting buildings here, too. My town has a bunch of them. I need to get out with my camera downtown.

    1. Karen, I agree, the older buildings have such character. This is old for this area, built in 1914, so almost a century old. Young compared to down east I know and a mere baby compared to Europe. Some new buildings have interesting architecture, but most are a snore. Get out and take some photos of your down town would ya! :)

    2. Reb, I might have to wait until my foot heals and the weather warms up a bit (i.e., springtime!) because that is a lot of walking!

    1. Thanks Leah. Yes, you don't see character in newer buildings...or ads like that.

  3. Love when a talented photographer like you makes me stop to admire something I might have walked right by in real life without noticing. Thanks for that!

  4. This building is in fine condition for its age.

Those side of building ads are becoming fewer and farther between, these days. Good find! And I had no idea that Nabob makes/made tea also.

    1. It is. I think I knew they made tea because it isn't a surprise to see that ad.

    1. Janet, so many of our older buildings are being, or have already been replaced, it is quite a shame. I would love to take a holiday down east again, there are some lovely buildings there.

  6. New buildings just don't seem to have the creativity of many of these older ones. This one is striking.

    1. Messymimi, you are right on the money there. There were a few decades that it seemed as though architects just gave up on the exterior of buildings. They are stark and bland. In some places though you can see some creativity coming back into the façades of new buildings.

  7. Louisville has a good many buildings of that style and era that have been lovingly preserved. I used to pass them and long to live on the upper floors. All that glass must mean wonderful light inside.

    1. Oh Mary Anne, I would love to live in the upper floors of some of the older buildings around here. Sadly this one faces west so it would be hot as all get out in the summer.

  8. My eyes aren't what they used to be - what is the name of the building? All I can make out is the 'shaw' part. Sigh.
It is a fabulous building, sis - good capture!

    1. Thanks. "H.V.SHAW BVILDING ERECTED 1914" Is what's on the sign. I know all about the bad eyes...I hate it.

  9. It's a historic building - originally built as a cigar factory.... here's some information about it:

  10. Good eye, Reb! I especially like the last photo. There's this old bank building here that I've shot a few times for the same reason as you. I'd really like to get access to the roof of a neighboring building to shoot it up close, but I think I'll wait until I get a grown-up camera rather than waste the access on my point-and-shoot.

I hope you keep finding treasures like this.

  13. I like that Nabob advert too. What kind of lens do you think you'd like to add next?

  14. Thanks Frank. I have my eye on a telephoto 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6, nothing spectacular, but I am accustomed to being able to shoot wildlife from far away from my Olympus. Now I just need to be able to do it with my Sony.

  15. I love old advertising on buildings. Portal, of sorts, to the past.
