Abandoned

This is Mom, barely an adult herself.
Kitten #1 - spunky little guy
Kitten #2 - shy little girl
you can see the devil in his eyes...
and how delicate she is.

They were found a few weeks ago in the laundry room of my building. You cannot imagine how hard it was to give them to the humane society! Sadly, the lowest price I was quoted for getting mom fixed was $250.00 and then ranged up to $550.00. I don't have that kind of money - I don't even have the $130.00 to adopt mom from the humane society with her fixed, given shots and micro-chipped. The kittens are $180.00 with all that done. I have been keeping an eye on the humane society web page and the kittens were adopted within a few days of being on the website. Thankfully it is a no-kill shelter, otherwise we would have taken them elsewhere.

Mom was very matted and extremely thin, but at least whoever the owner was kept them until the kittens were somewhat independent and litter trained. As soon as they were given litter (a friend from the building who found them supplied that and the food and water) they used it and we didn't find any messes in the laundry room after we moved them to the storage room in the photos.  They ate and sucked down water as though they hadn't been fed in a few days. Some people need to be treated the way they treat their pets.

Thanks for looking (and reading my rant).

  1. Agree about the people treatment.
Gorgeous kitties. I am so glad they were adopted. If my husband was not allergic we'd take in every kitty.

    1. A woman I worked with at the RCMP was allergic, she had six cats at one point. I am actually enjoying not taking antihistamines for the first time in 14 years. Of course I will do it again when the right cat comes along ;)

  2. Beautiful kitties. Thank you for the rescue; i've never met a cat i couldn't tolerate, but there are plenty of people i could easily do without.

  3. At least they weren't thrown out of a car like the puppy we had at work for a while (now happily adopted by one of our clients.) Glad they were adopted so quickly!

  4. Beautiful kitties! I know how hard it must have been for you to not keep them! Glad to know they were adopted quickly, though.

  5. Glad they got adopted quickly, and it was so kind of you to make sure they were safe and taken somewhere they could find homes!

Too bad the adoption costs were so high! Seems like that could easily get in the way of needy cats finding caring owners.

Cruelty/neglect of innocent animals makes me SO upset. Glad this story had a happy ending!

    1. Jan, the adoption costs are actually pretty reasonable. The cheapest I have ever seen a pure bred from a breeder is for $300.00, then you have to pay for the spay/neuter, micro-chipping and city license. It's a pretty good deal to get one from the humane society and have all that done for you.

Yes, I wish I knew who it was that abandoned them.

  6. What a relief to read that they have been adopted... and how sad that they were abandoned!
I wish that cat adoption (with shots, etc.) didn't cost so much. Even my free cat (found and gentled by someone else, then given to us) was quite expensive by the time we had her spayed and given shots. We are lucky that she has rarely needed anything else but love, food, and water. (and, you know, a lot of cat litter, litter box, scoop, collar, the leash that she hated...)

I was hoping, though, to see you were the proud new owner. :(

    1. I was very tempted Karen. Mom cat is still there and at $130 with the spaying and micro-chipping done, it is a good deal. Maybe after Christmas I will be able to save a few dollars and see what else they have there.

  8. Oh those precious little beauties. I can only imagine how tempting it was to keep them despite the expense. Mama is a beauty with her little mustache-like black mark. Will you be able to follow her progress, as well? I know how costly it is to keep a critter (or three).. it's not just the initial cost which seems very fair to me, but the continuing care.. feeding, further shots, well kitty checks.. etc. Not to mention any unforeseen issues which arise through the years.

I agree that some people are so stupid (I'm preferring stupid over cruel) when it comes to animals. My guess is that they thought someone would just take them in or at least do what you did. But why couldn't they just do that themselves.

    1. So far, she is still on the humane society web site. Once they are gone though, I don't think new owners post anything about them. The unforeseen issues can be so expensive and you live in hope that your cat never needs anything but the standard shots and the life altering surgery.

At least the person left them in the laundry room where someone could help them instead of throwing them outside in the cold.

  15. I have a feral cat that just showed up at the door and stayed. It felt nice to be chosen :-)

I had her fixed for around $30 dollars because of a local program that picked up the rest of the tab, but the numbers you quoted seem very high!

I still feel guilty about doing it to her.

    1. Dr.J Good for you, it would be nice to have a program like that here, sadly, there isn't one. I was quite astounded at the costs myself. You did her a favour though.
